woot!

I'm amazed and shocked - and pleased! My faith in my country and my fellow voters is not totally gone anymore. A tiny little flicker of truth and justice is back, a small step in the right direction.
Amazingly enough, in my state a gay marriage ban was voted down - much to my surprise. Also an animal rights proposition passed, another surprise. Not surprisingly all the anti-immigrant props passed.
We had the longest ballot in the nation! Two full legal-size pages on both sides, with nineteen propositions. That means laws passed directly by people's votes, not by the government. Which is kind of cool, but also frustrating, after all why do we elect a state government if they're just going to pass all the controversial bills on to us? On the other hand, our legislature often winds up full of disgusting conservatives, so it's not the worst thing in the world.
So anyway, it's not perfect, but so many good things happened this election. I'm really excited. We're going to have a female Speaker of the House of Representatives for the first time and that's great. On to Hillary in 2008! :-) Get women in charge everywhere. Like I said, baby steps but in the right direction. We'll know we're there when it's not even an issue.
